2014 Imagine Speaker’s Series featuring Dr. Myriam Miedzian, Author of Boys Will Be Boys: Breaking the LInk Between Masculinity and Violence
Dr. Miedzian first heard about Educating Communities for Parenting Baby Watch program in the late 1980’s while doing a research on decreasing violent behavior in boys, and continues to be a strong advocate of the Baby Watch program that began in Philadelphia at the Germantown Friends School in 1979. The Baby Watch program promotes pro-social behaviors and provides children with experiences that help them understand the importance of becoming caring and nurturing adults.
The faculty, and students at the Stephen Girard Elementary School located at 1800 Snyder Avenue in Philadelphia are excited to have ECP’s Baby Watch program at their school. Once a week the second grade classroom is transformed into an interactive learning lab where students are discovering more about themselves, developing an awareness of others, and thinking critically, while learning to solve conflicts non-violently.
Dr. Miedzian offered thought-provoking alternatives and strategies that schools and society can take to decrease negative behaviors in the classrooms and at home by first, educating for empathy.
Dr. Miedzian believes that enormous change could be seen if parenting was taught repeatedly to counter-balance violent behaviors.
Dr. Miedzian has appeared on over 300 TV and radio programs, including CHARLIE ROSE, OPRAH WINFREY, LARRY KING LIVE, and THE BRIAN LEHRER SHOW. Her research on school programs that help prevent violent behaviors formed the basis of an NPR Weekend Edition program. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/myriam-miedzian/violence-prevention-progra…
